Brief Profile

Mopelola Olubunmi Akeju, a Pharmacist was born on the 7th September, 1961. She did her Primary school years in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. Afterwards, she proceeded to Our Lady’s Girls High School, Modakeke, lie - Ife, Osun State; and passed out with Grade One Division in the West African School Certificate Examination. She graduated from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)) in 1983, lie- Ife, Osun State and obtained her first Mas­ter’s degree in Pharmacognosy in 1987 from the same University.Afterwards, she proceeded to the United States of America (USA) where she obtained another Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from University of Mississppi (Ole Miss) in 1995. In the course of her career, Mopelola Olubunmi had worked at various times as an hospital Pharmacist, Research Fellow, Community Pharmacist and a Consumer Protection Officer (in the area of quality assessment and conformity to approved standards of goods and services and consumer enlightenment) at Consumer Protection Council (now Federal Competition & Con­sumer Protection Commission FCCPC)). She had worked extensively on sensitization of consumers had presented programs on radio,TV, and at different forums on consumer rights and responsibilities, food & drug interactions, building consumer confidence on Genetically Modified (GM) foods, food fortification to combat mal- nutrition (hidden hunger) among other topical issues. Mopelola Olubunmi immediately after graduating as a Pharmacist, did her internship as required for the profession at the OAU University Health Centre while still pursuing her Masters degree in the University then as a Graduate Assistant from 1983 to 1984, before she proceeded to Kano, Kano State to serve her father land for the National Youth Service Corps at Dalia Orthopedic Hospital. During her service years in FCCPC, Mopelola Olubunmi was responsible to ensure that goods and services that consumers are exposed too are of good quality, safe for consumption and conform to established standards. Such include assessment of dairy products, bread & other con­fectioneries, alcoholic & non - alcoholic beverages, hand sanitizer (especially during the Covid -19 pandemic in years 2020 - 2021). She repre­sented her organization in various technical committees in the development of policies, rules, standards, regulations and guidelines to ensure that the consumers’ interests are taking into consideration and protected. As a Research fellow, her research interest had been on finding local alternatives to imported starch (rice, maize starch) used as adjuvant in tablet making in other to conserve foreign exchange. She also, carried out studies on the effect of polyphenolic acids onS lamda - prophage in­duction assay, a tool used to screen plant extracts for anti- cancer agents among other other studies. Mopelola Olubunmi had participated in various national and international programs/ short courses on environmental, pharmaceutical & food policies, safety, quality, trade and consumer protection that had taken her to various parts of the world such as Sweden, USA, Egypt, South Africa, South America (Peru),Turkey and Nigeria just to mention a few. Mopelola Olubunmi was at various times in the service of FCCPC, the Director, Consumer Education and finally retired from the organization on 7th September 2021 as Director, Quality Assurance & Development. Mopelola Olubunmi is currently the Chairman / CEO of Evergreen Consumer Advocacy & Safety Initiative (ECASI) where she still continues to advocate for the rights and the interests of consumers. She is also the Managing Director, MOPEC Consulting Limited, an outfit that consult on issues that bother on environmental protection, consumer goods ( Pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, health services) safety and con­sumer advocacy &enlightenment. She also consults for the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria(DIBAN) as the need arises.
