Brief Profile

Dr. Grain Malunga is a mineral resources expert with experience in geological mapping, mineral exploration, and evaluation; and environmental management. He is a practical academician with an honorary PhD in Geology from the Common wealth University of Business, a Masters of Philosophy in Mineral Resource Valuation from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine (France), a Postgraduate Diploma in Mineral Exploration from the Centre of Advanced Studies in Mineral Resource Evaluation (CESEV-France) and BSc Earth Sciences from the University of Malawi. Between 1986 and 2008 he was involved in exploration projects for rare earths, phosphates, precious metals, limestone coal, and onshore oil and gas. He has consulted for the Centre for Development of Enterprises (CDE), UNIDO, World Bank, and other private enterprises in mineral project evaluation including Techno-Social Economic Feasibility Studies. He has also authored two books titled Earth Science and Human Geography for Malawi published by Pan African Publishers in 2012 (ISBN 99908 911 9 2) and “An analysis of the Mineral Resources of Malawi printed by Design Printers, in2014 (ISBN 9 789990 8950 0 1)He served as Minister of Natural Resources, Energy, and Environment in Malawi from June 2009 to August 2011. He is a career civil servant who served as a geologist to Principal Secretary from April 1986 to January 2007. As Principal Secretary he was assigned to the Ministries of Industry, Science, and Technology; and Irrigation and Water Development. Between 1996 and 1997 he worked as General Manager for Mining Investment and Development Corporation (MIDCOR) and later as Deputy Director of Planning and Appraisal at Malawi Development Corporation (MDC) from 1997to 2002. He served as Director of Mines between 2002 and 2004He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (No. 49933),UK. He is also a Coordinator for the Chamber of Mines and Energy in Malawi on pro bono service.
